So you're Dutch? Because I'm about to be going to the Netherlands for a year and I want to know if that's a good decision?

cumberbum:

Yes I am!

It all depends why you’re going here to be honest. It’s quite a small and dull (I might just think that because I have actually lived here all my life) country, but our system (re: politics and health care and such) is.. in general not fucked up which is a definite plus. Also, if you don’t speak a word of dutch that won’t usually be an issue, unless you intend to go to the more rural areas. Almost everyone here speaks or at least understands English.

Other random facts you might want to know:

  • Our weather is shit; cold, and rainy
  • Most trains here have free wi-fi (huzzah!)
  • Amsterdam most certainly does not properly represent our whole country.
  • No one really smokes week here.
  • Our politics =/= Geert Wilders. Ignore that dude.
  • Everything is potatoes
  • Never eat a kroket or a frikandel, YOU’LL BE HOOKED FOREVER. THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THIS!!!!
  • You’re welcome to get a cup of tea at my place if you’re not a creepy person. x

Hope that helps!
